There are widespread reports of counterfeit hoodia products. Mike Adams of News Target, estimates that 80 percent of hoodia products are contaminated or counterfeit. Low carb diet can cause serious problems

news.bbc.co.uk // 25 Apr, 2007

Low carbohydrate diets for weight management are far from healthy, given their association with ketosis, constipation or diarrhoea, halitosis, headache, and general fatigue to name a few side-effects. These diets also increase the protein load to the kidneys and alter the acid balance in the body, which can result in loss of minerals from bone stores, thus compromising bone integrity. More →

Can You Really Loose Weight Quickly With The Atkins Diet?

diet.newhottips.com // 27 Apr, 2007

The Atkins Diet claimed there are two main unrecognized factors about Western eating habits. Arguing firstly that the main cause of obesity is eating refined carbohydrates, particularly sugar, flour, and high-fructose corn syrups. And secondly, that saturated fat is overrated as a nutritional problem, and that only trans fats from sources such as hydrogenated oils need to be avoided. From the other hand low-carbohydrate diets have been the subject of heated debate in medical circles for three decades. They are still controversial and only recently has any serious research supported some aspects of Atkins' claims, especially for short-term weight-loss (6 months or less). More →

Controversial benefits of Atkins diet

wellnessletter.com // 30 Apr, 2007

During the first two weeks on this diet your weight loss can be precipitous, since much of it is water. In addition, your body will burn its own fat. Actually, you burn fat all the time, but without carbohydrates your body does not burn the fat completely, and thus substances called ketones are formed and released into your bloodstream. This condition, called ketosis, makes dieting easier, because it often depresses appetite and may cause nausea. More →

Controversy About Atkins's Health

www.quackwatch.com // 2 May, 2007

Most low-carbohydrate diets do not attempt to limit the intake of proteins, fats, or total calories. In other words, their fat content tends to be very high. Promoters claim that unbalancing the diet will lead to increased metabolism of unwanted fat even if the calories are not restricted. This is not true, but calorie reduction is likely to occur because the diet's monotony tends to discourage overeating. More →

Importance of protein intake

www.hsph.harvard.edu // 3 May, 2007

How Hoodia Balance Works

www.hoodiabalance.com // 9 May, 2007

In 1937, a Dutch anthropologist studying the San Bushmen noted that they used hoodia to suppress appetite. But it wasn't until 1963 when scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa's national laboratory, began studying hoodia. The South African scientists, working with a British company named Phytopharm, isolated the active ingredient in hoodia, a steroidal glycoside, which they named p57. After getting a patent in 1995, they licensed p57 to Phytopharm. More →
